Vodafone has issued the statement below about “compulsory pre pay registration”, have a read and feel free to leave any comments.
Some newspapers have been running articles suggesting that the Government is planning to introduce a compulsory national register for all owners of mobile phones in Britain and that Vodafone is in talks with the UK Government to provide names and addresses of all of its UK customers including those who are unregistered pre-pay customers. It also suggests that Vodafone is making contingency plans to assist with this proposal.
Vodafone has not been in talks with the Government about these proposals.
Pay as You Talk helps ensure our customers have access to important communications services without a requirement to register. It means those without a permanent address or those who do not have official forms of ID such as a passport, are not excluded from using mobile services.
Vodafone UK does not support mandatory registration for pre-pay customers and has not made any contingency plans to start requiring registration for the purposes of a data collection scheme.
