University Aims To Get Clear Message Across
Professional football, public transport and social-networking websites are just some of the ways the University of Greenwich at Medway has made sure the message will get through to prospective news students ahead of A-level results day.
Thursday, August 14 is the day that teenagers will be opening their results and those getting higher or lower than expected grades, or who may have changed their minds, can enter the Clearing process to find a Higher Education course. It is also the period in which mature students – anyone over the age of 21 – and those looking to study a masters or PhD can find a place.
More than 2,000 copies of a guide to the facilities and courses available at the University of Greenwich at Medway have been distributed to schools, libraries and community centres in the region. Potential students have also been able to access information about the university thanks to advertising at Crystal Palace Football Club matches, social networking website Bebo and on buses around Maidstone and Medway.
The university, which has three campuses at Greenwich, Medway and Avery Hill, will be offering more than 350 single honours undergraduate and postgraduate courses this year including many new subjects. There is also a wide range of joint honours programmes available, where two subjects can be combined.
Two new degree programmes on sustainability will be available at the Medway campus from September. Courses on sustainable development and Ecology & Global Change Management will be run for the first time in conjunction with the Natural Resources Institute (NRI).
Dr Stuart Ashenden, Director of Academic Planning at the University of Greenwich at Medway, says: “Engaging with potential students is vital as they need to know the options available to them should they not get the grades they require or do better than expected. Some students may change their mind about not going to university or decide to postpone having a year out of education. Whatever the situation it’s not too late. More than 35,000 people go through the Clearing process every year and so people should not worry they will get left behind.
“We want to let people know that studying at Greenwich is an option they may not have considered. We have a wide variety of courses, some fabulous facilities as well as some of the lowest tuition fees in the country.”
All of the university’s campuses at Medway, Greenwich and Avery Hill will be staging open days where people can find out more about courses available. These take place on Saturday, August 16th from 10am to 3pm, Thursday, August 21 from 2pm to 8pm and on Saturday, September 13th, from 10am to 3pm.
Information evenings aimed at people looking to take short or part-time courses, will also be taking place. On Thursday, August 21 from 4pm to 8pm, and on September 3rd from 3pm to 7pm, advice and guidance will be available on courses that could suit people looking to learn new skills or enhance their existing ones. These sessions are particular relevant to people just starting a career or looking to improve their professional qualifications.
A free Clearing telephone hotline is now open on 0800 005 006. Advisers will be on hand from 8.30am on Thursday, August 14, to help A-level students, who have received their results as well as others who are interested in starting a course this September, to find the right programme available.
