Many of us including myself are on some kind of online social network site with Facebook, MySpace and Bebo being the favourite. Today Facebook.com has launched a version of its site targeting mainland Chinese Web surfers to compete with local and overseas rivals in the world’s largest Internet market.
It’s said that Facebook users in mainland China who access the website are redirected to zh-cn.facebook.com, which is in the simplified version of Chinese used on the mainland.
I am sure that most of you out there know about Facebook but for those who don’t Facebook is an online network which allows users to create personalised pages and link to others. Facebook has been released in three languages this year French, German and Spanish and it’s said that more than 67 million users live outside the United States.
According to reports Facebook is playing catch-up to MySpace, which established a Chinese-language Web site back in April 2007 and has tapped into over 20 countries globally.
According to the China Internet Network Information Centre, China overtook the US to become the world’s biggest Internet market with 221 million Web users by the end of February.
Which social network site do you belong to? I belong to Facebook.
