Which breeds of dog do the people of Kent favour for pets?

June 11th, 2008 · No Comments · Email This

According to a survey that was complete by the RSPCA the county’s unwanted dogs in Kent are Staffordshire bull terriers followed by rottweilers, large crossbreeds, staffie crosses and akitas. And the dogs that people wanted to own were Labradors, small breeds, puppies, cross breeds and Yorkshire terriers.

It’s said that RSPCA blame irresponsible owners for the Staffie’s aggressive reputation not the dogs themselves. RSPCA regional superintendent for the south east, Paul Stilgoe, said that “Staffies have had a terrible press, but this is not of their own making – in fact they’re wonderful dogs. If well cared for and properly trained they can make brilliant companions. Our experience suggests that problems occur when bad owners exploit the staffie’s desire to please by training them to show aggression.”

To celebrate RSPCA Pet Adoption Week, the charity is encouraging people to consider a Staffie as they can make the perfect pets. But before animals can be adopted they have a behavioural assessment and a health check to help match them with the right new owner.
