June 11th, 2008 · No Comments · Email This

Take part in a medieval murder mystery to be played out at Groombridge Place near Tunbridge Wells on June 21st and 22nd and spot the clues to uncover the killer of a 15th century clerk embroiled in a marriage feud.

The mystery is based around a wealthy widow, Lady Elizabeth Carey, whose young son stands to inherit a substantial estate. Her family are fervent Lancastrians and want her to marry a fellow supporter, but seeing an opportunity to acquire more land and wealth, the Yorkist King Edward 1V wants her to marry one of his own supporters.

The characters will play out the story throughout the day and visitors will be able to inspect carefully prepared crime scenes and spot the clues to help the Sheriff and his men solve the mystery. For those who can’t stay the whole day there will be handouts guiding them round so they can solve the mystery in their own time – and yes – the answer will be there!.

There will archery displays and foot combat tournaments authentic to the later medieval period and a parade modelling high fashion of the time. A living history encampment will recreate life during the 15th century where visitors can experience the sights, sounds and smells of a bygone age.

Throughout the event all the much loved attractions will be there too, including Adam the zeedonk who is half zebra, half donkey and his friend Peaches the miniature donkey; the challenging Dark Walk obstacle course; giant swings; Romany Camp; hilltop fort and birds of prey flying demonstrations, canal boat rides and much more.

The 17th century formal gardens will be at their peak, with scented roses and honeysuckle, quintessentially English herbaceous borders and perfectly groomed lawns. The Oriental garden will be especially spectacular.

Entrance to the gardens and the special event are £9.95 adults, £7.95 children and seniors and a family ticket to admit two adults and two children is £32.95. For more information visit groombridge.co.uk or call 01892 861444.
