George Sampson out of school today: not ok for our children

George Sampson may be £100,000 richer and a TV star after winning Britain’s Got Talent but yesterday he was brought back down to earth and faced an 80-minute detention after being repeatedly late for school because of appearances on breakfast TV and radio programmes since his win.

George said that ‘I can’t celebrate my win because I have detention,’ he said. ‘I’ve been late for school by about ten minutes every day. They clocked up how many minutes I’ve missed. The school has sent a letter home saying I have to do 81 minutes in detention. I never get into trouble, but they won’t let me off this.’

What the school should be doing is praising him for even turning up to school and what is 10 minutes that’s just registration time. I understand the point that the head is trying to get across about being late because it is his most important year but on the other hand what is 10 minutes?

Today George is not at school and is appearing on the TV show This Morning which starts at 10.30am. Now what I want to know is how he has managed to get time off because we cannot even take our children out of school to go on holiday.

You used to be able to take your children out of school for two weeks a year but this is changing and because of this all the holiday costs have gone up making it harder for families to go on holiday even to places in the UK let alone abroad,

The only reason I can see that the holiday prices have increased in the school holidays is because the companies are not getting the business during term time.

The only people who are not affected by this are those who do not have children and can go away when the holidays are cheaper.

What do you think? should the schools still allow children to have two weeks a year off during school time?

    All celebrity children get time off school. Usually they have their own tutor so they can catch up on school work. And anyway, I bet you never had a day off sick when you weren’t really - this is no different! The school has applied the little bit of leaniance (sp?) that it is allowed.
    Holidays outside of term time have always been more expensive - the travel companies have found the way to make more money. School is so important; missing two weeks can have a big effect on the children. There should be some kind of legislation where travel companies can not bump up their prices so much during school holidays.

    I think that parents want the best of both worlds; they get money handed to them on a plate for having children, and then do not want to spend it on them. The thing is people decide to have children, then they expect the government to stump up cash to keep them. They made the decision to have children, why should people who choose not to have any, have to subsidize them.

    This is the one thing where parents have to pay that little extra for their children, but come on look how much money that get each month for them. Deal with it.

    Yes he is out of school rehearsing with the other acts for the tour, however, he and the other children are still receiving schooling via tutors the same as any other child performers eg those in Billy Elliot the Musical

    heyyyyy first i wanna say i lovey u george and glad u won, ok lets get down 2 bussiness, he still goes 2 skwl after stardom and is late by a few mintues at my skwl they dnt worry about it as much, but i think that the head has sumthing against george coz that is just outa order.
