On Sunday more than 2,000 women and children sprinted, jogged and walked around Capstone Farm in the Medway Race for Life fundraiser. Runners aged from young girls to grandmothers completed the 5k Cancer Research UK course.
Ted Baker who is the Deputy Mayor of Medway joined the 2,148 entrants in the pre-run warm-up, before the women and children headed to the start line at 11am.
Natasha Etienne who is the Cancer Research’s area events manager said that she was delighted with the day’s race. She said that “It was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. There was a really great atmosphere throughout. Prior to the race I’d set a fundraising target of £161,000 but I’m sure we’ll break through that and so I’d like to say thank you to the 2,148 women who took part. People feel empowered by the Race for Life. There were a lot of people of Sunday who have lost relatives to cancer or have the disease themselves but they’re doing something, helping to make that change. Because of that there was a real party atmosphere, with everyone dancing as they went round the course. I’m already thinking about next year’s event – we’re definitely on and I hope to make it bigger and better as the demand is there.”
Most of the runners had pink outfits with some also wearing touching tributes to loved-ones lost to cancer.
The next race for life will take place at Mote Park in Maidstone on Sunday. This race is fully booked but there are still places available for the Ashford event, being held at Victoria Park on Sunday June 29.
