Yesterday we reported about the latest New York crane collapse and that one person had died, sadly today we can confirm that number has increased and two construction workers were killed. As a result of this being the second New York crane collapse in such a short time, this weekend acting Commissioner Robert LiMandri suspended all crane operations throughout the city.
In the photo above you can see the aftermath of the crane that crashed into an apartment building and then plummeted to the street, the last disaster was on March 15 of this year and it killed seven people.
Amazingly no one in the building that the crane hit was hurt, this crane was 200 feet above street level and it’s hard to imagine the sight of a machine deck, boom and cab plummeting towards the ground. There has been many times that I have walked passed these massive cranes and got the scary thought of what would happen if it came crashing down, it’s sad that this has come true to other people on more than one occasion.
Officials have said that the crane’s turntable will be analyzed for mechanical failure, and we will report the findings of this, as they are made available. Ramadan Kurtaj, 27, made it to hospital after being crushed by part of the crane that hit the ground; sadly he later died at the hospital. A second worker, onald Leo, 30, was in the cab that hit the ground; he was found dead by the rescuers.
Lets hope that these workers are the last to ever see this kind of tragedy.
