A health and fitness club in Thanet is attempting to seduce gym ‘virgins’ through its doors by offering local people a month’s trial membership combined with a friendly, non-threatening approach to getting fit.
JJB Sports Health and Fitness Club at Westwood Cross has set up a special Get Active programme this summer as part of Thanet’s overall strategy to become a healthier place to live. From Monday June 2 until July 31, newcomers to the club will be able to enjoy use of the gym, indoor swimming pool, steam rooms and a variety of classes for a total of just £30 for four weeks.
JJB Sports general manager, Ross Simpson, said: “We’re offering people the full treatment, including a familiarisation tour of the gym together with a personalised programme. Our friendly team will go the extra mile to make sure people feel comfortable using the centre and the gym.
“A lot of people are nervous about walking into a fitness club for the first time, but here at JJB we have a relaxed atmosphere and a very mixed membership, with around 20% of members being over 50. We’ve got people in their 70s who are regular gym users.”
And Ross has a challenge for the people of Thanet: “We all know that a sedentary lifestyle is taking its toll, with obesity a major issue in the UK and here in Thanet the level of obesity in adults is nearly 24%. We can do something about that, starting with regular exercise. Why not come along and have a chat.”
The club is already working on a scheme in partnership with the local health authority, offering exercise programmes to people who have been referred by their GPs, including those who are obese or who have been suffering from depression.
